What is pea gravel?
Pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone, usually 1/8 to 3/8 inch across. It drains well and feels comfortable underfoot, which makes it a common choice for paths, patios, play areas and drainage. Lay it 2 to 3 inches deep for walking surfaces; a cubic yard weighs about 1.4 tons.
Pea gravel sizes
Suppliers grade pea gravel by the width of the stones. 3/8 inch is the size most yards stock and the one most people mean by "pea gravel."
| Size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 1/8 in | Joints between pavers, around small plants |
| 3/8 in | Paths, patios and play areas |
| 1/2 in and up | Drainage and driveway top layers |
Pea gravel colors
Natural pea gravel mixes tan, brown, gray and white stones, depending on where it was dug. Single-color white, gray and black pea gravel cost more and are usually sold in bags.
Where pea gravel works in landscaping
Pea gravel patio
A 3 inch layer over landscape fabric, held in by steel or paver edging, makes a quick, low-cost seating area. Use a stabilizer grid if furniture sinks in.
Pea gravel walkway
2 to 3 inches is enough for foot traffic. Edging keeps stones off the lawn.
Pea gravel driveway
Use it only as a top layer over 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed stone. On its own, rounded stone rolls under tires and ruts.
Pea gravel for drainage
The gaps between round stones let water through quickly, so it is used in French drains, around downspouts and behind retaining walls.
Where it causes problems
- On slopes, stones roll downhill.
- Without edging, it scatters into lawns and beds.
- Without fabric, weeds grow through.
- Wheelchairs, strollers and bikes sink into loose layers.
How deep to lay pea gravel
2 to 3 inches for paths and patios, and 3 to 4 inches as a driveway top layer. For playgrounds, depth depends on the height of the equipment; follow the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook.
How much pea gravel you need
Length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27, gives cubic yards. A 12 × 10 ft patio, 3 inches deep, needs 1.11 yd³, about 1.56 tons or 60 bags of 0.5 ft³, before adding extra for waste.

Landscape yards sell bulk pea gravel by the ton or cubic yard, plus a delivery charge. Home stores sell bags by the cubic foot. Bags make sense for small jobs; for more than about half a cubic yard, bulk usually costs less per ton. Enter your local prices in the calculator to compare the two.
How to lay pea gravel
- Mark the area and dig out 3 to 4 inches of soil.
- Set edging around the border.
- Lay landscape fabric, overlapping seams by 6 inches.
- For driveways, add and compact a crushed-stone base.
- Spread the pea gravel and rake it level.
Pea gravel questions
Pea gravel or crushed stone?
Crushed stone has sharp edges that lock together, so it makes a firmer base. Pea gravel is softer underfoot and drains better.
Do I need fabric under pea gravel?
Yes, if you want fewer weeds and less stone sinking into the soil.
Can you glue pea gravel?
Clear stone binders sold for gravel and mulch hold the top layer in place on paths and around fire pits. Follow the product's coverage rate.
